Oxford University’s Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science has teamed up with seven other leading Universities in Social Science Genetics to establish the European Social Science Genetics Network (ESSGN).
The network is offering 13 PhD students – including one at the Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science – the opportunity to join these leading Universities as they aim to answer a key research questions that has occupied social scientists for decades:
To what extent do inequalities in life chances arise from genetic variation, environmental factors, and their interplay, and what can we do about it?
This new European Research Council (ERC) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funded consortium spans demography, economics, genetics, political science, psychology, sociology and statistics. The network has also partnered with non-academic organisations committed to using data science to better understand inequalities in life chances.
Students can apply across the 13 positions and can apply specifically for one position. This includes a studentship supervised by our Director Professor Melinda Mills and Associate Member Professor Augustine Kong, Senior Group Leader in Genomic Epidemiology at Oxford’s Big Data Institute.
The PhD student will work with Melinda and Augustine’s team on a variety of potential topics including intergenerational transmission, family models and data, direct and non-direct effects, participation bias, and inequality of opportunity.
The 13 studentships will start in September / October 2023 with monthly allowances available. Ideal applicants have a Masters in social or medical science or statistics such as demography, economics, epidemiology, political science, sociology, statistics, genetics, and biostatistics. You also need to be a student with strong quantitative skills.
