Xinyi Zhao

I am a first-year DPhil student in Sociology at the Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science. My main research interests include applying digital and computational innovations (e.g. new types of data and methods) in demography and social science, with a particular interest in migration and gender disparity. I am also interested in the methods of scientometric, spatial data analysis, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). My ongoing research relies on large-scale digitized bibliometric data to document and analyze the international migration of researchers, and to examine the gender disparity across disciplines and geographies in academia. I further tend to investigate to what extent female researchers benefit from international migration and to what extent online dissemination (e.g. on Twitter) helps female researchers increase their scientific impact and visibility?

I am also affiliated with the lab of Digital and Computational Demography at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) in Germany. Prior to my DPhil study, I worked as a research assistant in the Department of Urban planning and Design at the University of Hong Kong. I hold a Master’s degree in Cartography and Geographic Information System from Nanjing University and a Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information System from China University of Geosciences (Wuhan).
