Recruiting now! Two Postdoctoral Research Fellows

The University of Oxford’s Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science and Department of Sociology are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Computational Social Science.

The post holders will report to Principal Investigator, Professor Ridhi Kashyap, and work closely with Centre colleagues in an interdisciplinary research environment.

Both positions will work on a research project analysing the impacts of digital expansion on gender equality and women’s social and economic opportunities, supported by the Gates Foundation.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will work on developing quantitative, causal evidence on the gender impacts of digital technologies using secondary survey datasets (e.g. Demographic and Health Surveys, Living Standards Measurement Studies) in low- and middle-income countries, with a special interest in comparative impacts across Africa and South Asia. More info can be found here.

Meanwhile, the Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Computational Social Science will work on developing research using computational, statistical and social data science approaches to expand knowledge on gender inequalities in digital connectivity, as well as the impacts of digital gender inequalities on social and economic domains in low and middle-income countries. More info can be found here.

You must apply for the positions through the University of Oxford jobs website. Please contact Ridhi Kashyap with any queries about the roles.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

  • Salary: Grade 7 - £34,308 - £42,155 per annum (with a discretionary range up to £46,047 per annum)

You will have a PhD/DPhil in a relevant quantitative and computational field, such as Economics, Demography, International Development, Quantitative Sociology, Statistics, Politics, or related. You will have a strong grasp of statistical and econometric methods, including methods for causal inference with observational datasets. You will have experience in using and linking individual-level survey data from low- and middle-income countries. You will have experience in writing code, preferably in R, Stata or Python, for quantitative data curation, cleaning, and analysis.

This is a full-time post, fixed-term for two years with possibility for renewal contingent on funding availability.

Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Computational Social Science

  • Salary: Grade 8 - £43,414 - £51,805 per annum, with a discretionary range to £56,592 per annum

  • Closing date for applications: 12:00 midday UK time on 31st January 2023 with interviews taking place in February 2023.

  • For the full range of responsibilities and selection criteria, and to apply, please view the job description on the University of Oxford jobs website.

You will have a PhD/DPhil in an area with significant quantitative and computational expertise, preferably (although not necessarily) with some application to social science domains, such as Computational Social Science, Social Computing, Statistics, Demography, Economics, Quantitative Sociology, Computer Science, or related field, with some post-qualification research experience.

Whilst the role is a grade 8 position, we would be willing to consider candidates with potential but less experience, for which an appointment would be at grade 7 (salary range £34,308 - £42,155) with the responsibilities adjusted accordingly. This would be discussed with applicants at interview/appointment where appropriate.

This is a full-time post, fixed-term for three years.
