What is the Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science?
The LCDS was founded in October 2019 at the University of Oxford and financed for the first 10 years until 2029 by the Leverhulme Trust and Nuffield College and led by Principal Investigator and Director Professor Melinda Mills. We are a fundamentally interdisciplinary centre with the aim to tackle the most relevant and challenging demographic problems of our time. Our aim is to disrupt and realign conventional thinking and infuse science into demography. Our research areas are described below and on our website, but focus on core demographic topics including: fertility, family, mortality and life expectancy, migration, aging, and environmental threats. What type of student scholarships does the LCDS offer?
LCDS is currently offering multiple types of student scholarships. Please indicate which scholarship(s) you would like to be considered for in your application.
LCDS DPhil (PhD) Scholarships. The DPhil, which is the Oxford equivalent to a PhD, is a 3 year programme.
For the DPhil Scholarship students receive a yearly stipend from £37,609 in year 1 to 40,678 in year 3 to cover University and College Fees and a basic living allowance. For international students these scholarships are the equivalent of approximately £117,080 in total. For UK students this amount is adjusted to reflect lower tuition fees at around: £88,350 in total.
Numbers might be adjusted to match any upward changes in fees and stipends.

International Max Planck Research School for Population, Health and Data Science (IMPRS-PHDS) Scholarship. If granted this scholarship, next to your DPhil you will have the advantage to follow a three year programme that merges demography, epidemiology and data science. The school equips doctoral students not only with advanced knowledge of the theory and methods of demography and epidemiology, but also with strong technical skills in statistics, mathematical modelling, and computational and data management and data science. Students receive a scholarship which covers tuition fees for 3 years. For home students this is approximately £37.650 (~£12,550/year) and for international students, this is around £76,290 (~£25,430/year).

LCDS CaND3– Consortium on Analytics for Data-Driven Decision-Making Scholarship see: https://www.mcgill.ca/cand3/ Each year LCDS selects one student to join in this international training programme of 32 partners, financed in Canada. You will have the unique opportunity to engage in an extensive 12-month online training programme next to your own Oxford studies. Students receive training from top experts in the areas of: population aging, data science and computational demography and data-driven decision making. Students receive a stipend of $10,000 CAD (Canadian) for one year from the LCDS and are expected to participate virtually and when possible (due to the pandemic) join one of the CaND3 events.

The amounts listed here are shown for the highest level international student fees. Scholarships for UK students will be adjusted to reflect the lower tuition fee. Scholarship amounts are dependent upon changes in University and College tuition fees, exchange rates and inflation, thus the amounts listed provide an indication and may be subject to change. For multi-year scholarships, continuation of scholarships is evaluated on a yearly basis depending on performance and active participation.
When is the deadline for applications?
The deadline for LCDS and most Oxford scholarships is the same as the general Oxford student application deadline, which is Friday 07 January 2022, 12.00 noon UK time. If you miss that, the final application deadline for entry is March 01, 2021, also 12.00 noon UK time. We will select from the January pool of applications and if no students are deemed eligible we will select from the March pool. Our strong advice is that you submit by the January 2021 deadline in order to be considered for not only our scholarship but other Oxford-wide scholarships.
Will Brexit impact my application and chance to study in the UK?
No way! The LCDS and the University of Oxford remain open to international researchers and research excellence. At LCDS, we don’t just talk about diversity, we enact it. Our LCDS core team spans members from across Europe, North America, Latin America, Africa, India, China and beyond.
Do I have to list a supervisor that is part of the LCDS?
Yes. Our scholarships are designed to enhance research within the centre and foster collaborative teamwork and learning within the LCDS family of researchers. For this reason, and to be accountable to our funders, we can only fund students who are supervised by one of the LCDS staff listed in the grants.

We are a fundamentally interdisciplinary centre, so if you are interested in cross-departmental/discipline supervision note this in your application.
Should I contact a potential supervisor or supervisors before submitting my application? Am I guaranteed that I will get the supervisor that I name?
It is not strictly required to contact your preferred supervisor in advance. It is a good idea to look at the research profiles of the different staff to get an idea of who might be a good fit. We cannot guarantee that you will be matched with the supervisor that you name due to various workload reasons, but we can guarantee that you will get excellent supervision and be welcomed into the LCDS family.
Can I name multiple supervisors?
Sure! We often have joint supervision teams which can be very useful and complementary for students.
What kind of topics and approaches are considered as relevant for these LCDS scholarships?

Topics range from health, gender equity, digital and computational demography, sociogenomics and working with genetic data to study behavioural outcomes such as fertility and chronotype, mortality and life span inequalities, intergenerational processes, family demography, social network research, formal demography, causality and methodology, historical demography, social mobility and much more!

Let’s just put it this way – if you are not interested in us, we are not interested in you.
Which College should I apply to?
All students at Oxford are Members of a College, which is another one of the benefits of this University. You can state your college preference on your application form or otherwise you will be assigned to a college. At present LCDS core team members are at Nuffield College, which we would recommend as the College to list.
